Hi I’m Sonya, the owner of Red Fox Photos

When I was 13 I started developing my own negatives and prints in a tiny darkroom my dad set up in the crawlspace of my parents’ basement. I was using my first Nikon 35mm SLR, and I was obsessed, running around sticking my lens in everyone’s face; photos of my mom doing laundry, photos of friends watching TV, photos of everyone’s pets, photos of my feet, and so many self portraits! In high school and college I moved on to bigger and better darkrooms and large format cameras. Everyday I would spend hours in the darkroom, experimenting with different techniques and equipment, watching images slowly emerge in the developing trays like magic.

Photography has always been more than just taking pictures for me—it’s about capturing moments that feel alive long after they pass. I used to look through my photo albums religiously, enchanted by the way a photo can take you right back to where you were, and how you felt when it was taken. We all have those photos, the ones that become iconic to us in the folklore of our own identity. A picture that you stick to the fridge, and it stays there, peeking out at you through the years, weaving itself into the memories of your family dinners, late-night study sessions, and impromptu gatherings with friends; remembrances of the love you have around you, the connections that define you, tiny moments greater than the sum of their parts. After years in a career that didn’t honor the human spirit, I’m grateful to now be doing something I find meaningful and rewarding.
